A Newport Highboy Masterpiece
SE000601
H 85in x W 38.5in x D 20.25in
A Newport Rhode Island masterpiece highboy in mahogany, having three original carved, two part finials, classic "closed" bonnet, double shell carvings, open talon ball and claw front feet and padded rear feet. The totality of identifying markers leads one to believe that this piece is by John Townsend. However, recent research may point to another equally important cabinet-maker of the period in Newport that is Benjamin Baker. John Townsend employed various cabinet-makers by special request to supply cases, legs and other elements for special clients. Benjamin Baker was especially employed by Townsend. A documented and signed lowboy is signed by Benjamin Baker and dated 1764 with the identical shell carvings from this example. Further research will likely reveal that both Townsend and Baker both contributed to this masterpiece. More information can be obtained by referencing the Chipstone/New England catalogs by Dennis Andrew carr and edited by Luke Beckerdite; Vol. 2004, ppg 47-89.
