A Fine George III Serpentine Canape
SE000164
A George III mahogany serpentine canapé from the last quarter of the 18th century. The important size and design of this piece is related to a suite of furnishings at Langley Hall (now Park) Norfolk, U.K. That seating furniture has been attributed to Thomas Chippendale, Jr. The "acroteria" design, in the Grecian temple fashion, are reminiscent to palm flowers in allusion to the poetry deity, Apollo. The carved crest rail is also inlaid with a floral anthemia motif. The entire frame is remarkably intact and original. English, circa 1780. Now in linen covering.
