|Title:||A Beautiful Bookcase Attributed to Thomas Chippendale|
|Size:||H 88.75in x W 84in x D 23in|
A beautiful breakfront bookcase attributed to the workshop of Thomas Chippendale with original hardware, circa 1759. The central section with glazed doors having astragal shaped mullions over a closed cabinet below with interior linen drawers is flanked by glazed upper cabinet wings over graduated banks of drawers below. The cabinet retains an older mellow patina and maintains an integrity rarely found in this market.
This multi purpose bookcase combines a china cabinet, chest of drawers and clothes press as in The Dumphries House Bookcase made for Lady Dumphries. It mirrors the type of furniture listed by Chippendale as "Bookcases for Libraries or Private Rooms" in his "The Gentleman's and Cabinetmakers Directory" of 1754.
