|Title:||A Ceremonial Chair|
|Size:||H 42.5in x W 27.5in x D 24in|
A very rare 18th century "ceremonial" chair or "speakers" chair in carved mahogany. The grand scale of this chair and its condition are remarkable. The unusual shaped back is a variation of the traditional vase shaped profile of so many chairs from the Hepplewhite period. This chair appears to be in original surface. The arched crest with rosette and vine carving is over a ribbon pierced splat with acanthus carved base joined by scrolled carved arms on a tapezoidal seat supported by a carved fluted apron raised on square tapered legs with rosettes and bellflower motifs. Wood samples taken have proven to be inconclusive as to the origin of this chair. Elements of the decoration relate to American or Irish design. More detailed research is needed to place the origin of this unusual example. American or Irish, possibly English.
